History

Wine production in Tokaj can be traced back to at least the 12th century, though it likely started even earlier, influenced by Roman viticulture. The unique climate and soil of the region, particularly the volcanic soil and the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers create an ideal environment for the cultivation of grapes susceptible to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This fungus is essential for the production of the sweet Aszú wines, concentrating the sugars and flavors in the grape, leading to the creation of Tokaj’s distinctive and highly valued wines. The golden age of the Tokaj wine region was in the 17th and 18th centuries when its wines became a sought-after luxury in the courts of Europe. It was named the “Wine of kings, king of wines”.
