Hi traveller!
Discover the Gemer region, which is located in eastern Slovakia – about 45 minutes from Košice.
What is so special about Gemer?
The region was very prosperous in the 15th and 16th centuries. The success was driven by the mining of precious metals such as gold, silver, and copper and its strategic location along trade routes. However, the economic landscape of Gemer faced challenges due to wars, plagues, and changing political dynamics. In particular, Ottoman incursions and changes in trade routes after the discovery of America weakened the region. The result is a god-forsaken place full of contrasts between ancient prosperity and subsequent decline.
Enjoy nature!
One of the most distinctive features of the Gemer region is the presence of extensive karst landscapes, particularly evident in the Slovak Karst (Slovenský kras) area, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This region is dotted with hundreds of caves, including the famous Domica Cave, known for its beautiful chambers and underground rivers. These karst formations are the result of thousands of years of water erosion, creating a network of underground caves, sinkholes, and limestone pavements. Therefore – Gemer attracts speleologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
